Now the U.S. Airforce has made Science Fiction come to life. There is a new technology which attaches nanoparticles to clothing fibers using microwaves. These chemicals will repel water, oil and bacteria, because they are directly bounded to the nanoparticles. These two elements combine to create a protective coating on the fibers of the material. This coating both kills bacteria, and forces liquids to bead and run off.

The U.S. Military spent more than 20 million to develop the fabric.

"During Desert Storm, most casualties were from bacterial infections - not accidents or friendly fire." Jeff Owens, one of the scientists who worked to develop the process said.

They treated underwear of soldiers who worn them for several weeks and it was found to stay hygienic. Not only did the underwear stay clean, but it was also reported that it cleared up some skin complaints.

In 1951, there was a film called, "The Man in the White Suit." This film had the general idea of clothes that never got dirty. In 1961, the Science Fiction writer, Stanislaw Lem, wrote about spray-on clothing, in his novel, "Return From the Stars." In the Utopian world of the novel, life's necessities are readily available to every one - including single-use, original clothing.

Once again the science world brought science fiction to true life.

Fabrican is fabric in a can - yes, it's true. Spray on a shirt or dress, right out of the can. The fabric looks similar to a thin cotton teeshirt, but it's very clingy. Fabrican is the creation of Manel Torres, a post-graduate from the Royal College of Art.

This cloud of non-woven cloth is made by spraying a chemical formula directly onto the skin. Thousands of fibers splatter against your skin. The fibers bind together to create disposable apparel. It's as tough as hemp for some uses, or soft as silk for others.

As the future comes to us at warp speed, another idea in a novel is coming to life. In William Gibson's 1984 novel, "Neuromancer," he writes: The Panther Modern leader, who introduced himself as Lupus Yonderboy, wore a polycarbon suit with a recording feature that allowed him to replay backgrounds at will.

A real-life polycarbon suit is the dream of Greg Sotzing of the University of Connecticut, in Storrs.
He has developed threads of electrochromic polymers which change color in response to an applied electric field.

This is how it works:

A mixture of differently colored threads would be knitted or woven into a teeshirt or blanket, along with a small number of thin metal wires connected to a battery pack and a micro-controller. The crisscrossing wires effectively divide the shirt into pixels. Each colored thread changes its state at different voltages, so by varying the voltage between different pairs of wires you can change the color of each pixel. By connecting the controller to a camera, it could even be made to switch the pixels to display a pattern matching your surroundings.

Electrochromic polymers are colored because the electrons in their chemical bonds can absorb light across a range of visible wavelengths. When a voltage is applied it changes the energy levels of these electrons, causing them to absorb light of a different wavelength, and changing the material's color. When the voltage is reversed, the electrons return to their usual energies and the original color returns.

This teeshirt is still in the process of being made, but they already have been successful in creating fibers which will turn from orange to blue, and from red to blue, according to "New Scientist" print edition.

Have you heard yourself say "Vintage clothing is so small - nothing fits me. How do I get vintage clothing in a large or plus size?" It's hard enough to find vintage that is in good condition and a style that you like. Having to deal with size gives it that extra challenge. Our body size has changed over the years, not only are we taller and average weight has gone up but our expectation of how clothes will fit has changed. For example, 1950's clothing was designed to show off an hourglass shape with a defined waist. This was achieved with padded bras and girdles or waist cinchers. The bodices were more fitted than we are used to now. So how do you go about getting vintage clothing that fits ?

The first thing is to find your measurements and to be honest about them. It's frustrating to try on things that you think should fit and they don't. Take a blouse and a dress that fits you well. Lay the blouse down on a flat surface. Starting at the top, measure from the top of the sleeve seam across the back of the blouse to the top of the other sleeve seam. Knowing this measurement will help you eliminate anything that will be too tight in the shoulders. Measure the blouse across the back from side seam to side seam right under where the sleeve comes into the garment (the armpit), double it- that's your bust. Measure the blouse across the back from side seam to side seam at the waist and double it - that's the waist. Take the dress and do the same measurements along with the hip measurement. You'll have two sets of measurements that give you a range of what fits you. You can use these measurements as a guide when you shop online or in stores just be sure to bring along a tape measure.

There are more vintage businesses out there than ever before both online and in brick and mortar stores, along with thrift and consignment stores. Online use search terms like plus size, large size, big size, XL along with the word vintage and dress or skirt or clothing. There are web sites that specialize in plus size vintage. Check their link pages for other business that carry large size vintage. They're all looking for the same customers and will link to each other. Check the measurements on the site to see if they get merchandise in your range. Watch for listings that give the bust measurements in the title or use terms like B44. This usually indicates that they know they have a larger size and want to catch your attention. Check auctions sites for specialty dealers or even people who are selling from their own plus size vintage collection.

Remember that plus size is a relative term. What is large in your mind is a medium to someone else. There are no set standards. Communicate with dealers, shop owners, sales help at consignment stores and let them know what you're looking for. They know their own stock and may be able to help you pull things to try on. They can let you know when new merchandise comes in and maybe give you first pick because the larger sizes usually go first. Look at out of season clothing, they're not being picked over as much and you may luck out and find that generously sized 50's cotton summer dress while everyone else is looking at coats !

Should you believe size tags in vintage clothing? Take size tags in vintage with a grain of salt because sizes have changed and can differ from manufacturer to manufacturer. Plus or large size vintage dresses used to be called "half-sizes" so sometimes you see the "half-size" with the number. Tags that say 20 ½ or 22 ½ in vintage clothing fits about a size 16 or 18 in today's clothing size. Also look for companies that made larger sizes like "Lane Bryant" or "R and K Originals." When you see "sized to height" on a tag it means it is sized for a taller shape.

Patience, persistence and a little luck will help you find vintage clothing in your size and help you develop your own "special" look.

For boys today there are few occasions that require a radical change of dress compared to everyday wear.

There is underwear, which may consist of boxers, Y-fronts, slip-ons or boy shorts. Until adolescence when there might be greater need for modesty or support, most boys will be happy to wear whatever has been purchased for them and is comfortable to wear. Labels might be a nuisance but they can easily be cut out, seams might be irritating so next time choose a different style or a seamless pair of underpants; trial and error will determine the style your boy is most comfortable with though they may still insist (while they are quite young) on the latest cartoon film character regardless of the comfort they may or may not bring to the wearer. Fabrics for underwear are various though cotton mixes are the most popular. It's best to avoid nylon pants as they generate heat and cause excessive sweating. Vests or T-shirts might be worn as undergarments on chilly days and rather than wearing pajamas per se, your boy might opt for a pair of boxers and a tee as his night attire. Whether you're going to school, out to play or to a party it probably doesn't matter what underwear you have on as long as it is clean and comfortable.

Outer wear probably consists of school uniform and non-school clothes. If your boy needs to attend a dressy function like a wedding it would probably be more worthwhile to hire an outfit than to make a purchase that would only be worn once. For functions such as funerals and formal occasions a smart pair of slacks and a button down shirt with a tie (optional or indeed borrowed) would suffice. If your boy has a formal school uniform you can use the trousers and shirt from it to make up an outfit. What makes an outfit classy or trashy is the footwear with which it is worn so make sure you child does have a pair of respectable looking shoes other than trainers/sandals/boots that are clean and polished to pull off an air of respectability.

Jeans, shorts/boardies, cargo pants and track pants are comfortable and interchangeable with a variety of different tops to see your boy through everyday. A bank of classic plain T-shirts will go with any of the trousers and a hoody or sweat top should suffice for the rough and tumble of an active childhood. A favourite T-shirt, football top or rugby shirt is practical to wear and as long as it isn't wrecked with rips, stains or grubby wear marks is perfectly acceptable in most situations. Beyond these basics is a personal choice that suits your budget, wardrobe and storage space and the world is your oyster. Outfits do not have to be painstakingly co-ordinated with matching accessories, that detracts from the individual's personality and self-expression so make allowances for personal taste and preferences when helping your boy choose clothing that he will like to wear and you are willing to pay for.

To wear, or not to wear; that is the question! All kidding aside, there are some serious things to discuss when it comes to the question of clothing inside of saunas. Some people have no problems when it comes to stripping down to their birthday suits, no matter who sees them! The majority of the population however does have problems with being seen naked in public - even in a sauna. What then, is considered proper etiquette in a sauna when it comes to clothing?

I will never forget one moment in my childhood when I opened a sauna door and encountered a very unattractive, naked woman sitting inside. I quickly closed the door, and saunas have never been the same for me since! Granted, there are some settings in which you can go without your clothes in a sauna. For example, if you own your own private sauna in your home, there shouldn't be a problem going in your birthday suit! Another example would be at a private club where the clothing option is clearly stated. In a public sauna however, it really is best to leave your clothes on.

Europeans have been using saunas for generations now, and North Americans only discovered them a few years ago. It is well known in Europe that saunas work the best when the user is not wearing any clothes at all, and maybe nudity is more accepted over there because of this fact. In North America however, nudity is not so acceptable! It is better to use a sauna without clothing, but when you think about sharing space with eight or nine other people - especially when those people are complete strangers, clothing is suddenly more important than getting the best use of the sauna.

Another reason not to forget your clothes when going into the sauna is because of the position your body must be in to get the maximum results. Sauna experts will tell you not to sit in the sauna - you must lie down to get the full sauna benefits. They will also tell you that if you do have to sit down, it is best not to let your feet dangle. In these positions, it is probably best to be clothed!

You can get away with a very small bathing suit, or even wearing a towel wrapped around your body in the sauna. As long as the material of the suit and the towel is made of breathable cotton, you should still be able to reap the full benefits of the sauna. Some very uncomfortable moments can be created when you don't pay attention to the kind of sauna you are entering without clothing - please pay close attention to this very important detail!

Saunas can be a great experience for anyone who wants to go, and you've got to remember not to spoil that experience for everyone else! (Like it was spoiled for me!)
